The independence of Barbados on 30th November 1966, gave a new sense of responsibility and identity to every Barbadian at home and abroad. Barbadians in the UK, wanting to further establish their identity, realised the need for togetherness and co-operation. Associations sprung up throughout the UK, functioning locally in their communities and independently.

Thirteen years after Independence (1979) many of these Associations came together and formed the "Umbrella Group", now known by its new name "The National Council of Barbadian Associations, UK" (N.C.B.A. (UK)).
